2024 Christmas & New Year Healthcare Rates: A State-by-State Comparison

As we approach the 2024 holiday season, healthcare workers across Australia will be maintaining essential services through Christmas and New Year. This comprehensive guide breaks down the holiday rates and entitlements across different states and healthcare systems.

Nurses Award 2020

December 24th (6pm - midnight)
- Rostered to Work - 200%

December 25th
- Rostered to Work - 200%

December 26th
- Rostered to Work - 200%

December 27th
- New Years Day - 200%

Queensland Health

December 24th (6pm - midnight)
- Rostered to Work - 250%
- Would normally work but rostered off - 100% for 6 hours

December 25th
- Rostered to Work - 250%
- ‘Special’ Public Holiday - 100% paid if not working

December 26th
- Rostered to Work - 150%

January 1st
Rostered to Work - 150%

NSW

Full Time:

  • (Public Holiday listed)
    - Rostered to Work > 150% + 1 day additional annual leave

  • (Public holiday not listed) > 7 day basis
    - Rostered to Work > 150% + 1 day additional annual leave
    - Rostered off > 1 day additional annual leave

  • Day Worker
    - Rostered to Work:
    • 150% + 1 day additional annual leave OR
    • 250%
    - Rostered on but not required to work - Paid 100%

  • Shift Worker
    - Rostered to Work:
