The Nurses' Professional Association of Australia (NPAA) stands with our sister association the Australian Medical Professionals Society (AMPS) in calling for the urgent reinstatement of Dr Jillian Spencer. As outlined in AMPS’ formal correspondence to Queensland Health executives and Ministers, Dr Spencer, a respected senior psychiatrist, has been suspended for raising legitimate, evidence-based concerns about the gender transitioning of minors within the Queensland Children’s Hospital.
This case raises grave questions about whether clinicians in Queensland are truly free to speak up for patient safety without fear of reprisal. The Cass Review, recent legal findings, and international policy shifts underscore the growing consensus around the need for caution and rigorous oversight in gender-related care for children.
NPAA joins AMPS in demanding transparency, clinical neutrality, and the protection of frontline health professionals. We encourage all members and stakeholders to read the letter in full and support the call for an evidence-based, ethical approach to youth care in Queensland.
