Case Win: Allegations of Improper Access to Controlled Medications

An employee was recently found improperly accessing controlled medications using colleagues' identification codes and making errors in medication dosage recordings—both serious breaches of healthcare protocol. Such incidents typically result in immediate termination. However, in this case, the employee received a severe reprimand and was placed on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) instead.

The Incident

Improper access to controlled medications and medication errors are critical concerns in healthcare, with the potential for patient harm and legal consequences. This incident raised alarms about the effectiveness of oversight and workplace systems in detecting such breaches. Normally, the severity of these actions would lead to immediate termination to protect patient safety.

The Outcome: Reprimand and PIP

In an unusual decision, the employee was placed on a PIP rather than being dismissed. The PIP provides the employee an opportunity to improve, with bi-weekly review meetings to track progress. While the PIP is currently progressing satisfactorily, there are questions about why the employee was not reported to the relevant professional regulatory body, which is usually the next step in such cases.

What This Means

This case raises important questions about workplace accountability and rehabilitation. While disciplinary action is essential, does it always require termination, or can it be balanced with an opportunity for improvement? As the PIP continues, it will be important to see if the employee can meet expectations and whether further action is needed.

Ultimately, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of clear protocols in healthcare settings, especially when it comes to safeguarding controlled substances and ensuring patient safety.
