Case Win: Fight For Fair Pay

Advocacy & Support for Nurses

In a significant win for experienced nurses, the Nurses Professionals Association of Australia (NPAA) has successfully advocated for a member who faced pay disparity and an unfair workload.

Despite their proven track record, including six years at an AO3(4) level with Queensland Health and managing their own legal services business, the member was initially placed at the lowest level in their current role. The member questioned this decision, especially given their substantial experience and the demanding nature of their responsibilities.

Since joining the organization, the member had consistently been managing the workload of what was normally a two-person role. Even when a new colleague joined, the member continued to shoulder a disproportionate amount of the workload. However, the new colleague, with less experience, was employed at a higher pay grade due to a transfer from another state department.

The member perceived a clear discrepancy in pay levels, arguing that their extensive experience and current responsibilities were not being adequately recognized. They believed that while their previous role may have been in a different department, their skills and knowledge were directly relevant to their current position.

The NPAA intervened on behalf of the member, initiating communication with the Acting Director of Business Partnerships to address the delay in processing the member's inquiry. After discussions with the organization, a decision was made to backpay the member, with the back pay going back to August 2023.

This case highlights the importance of advocating for fair compensation and workload distribution, especially for experienced nurses. The NPAA's successful intervention demonstrates their commitment to protecting the rights and interests of their members. By securing back pay for the member, the association has not only rectified a significant injustice but has also sent a strong message to employers about the value of experienced nurses and the importance of fair treatment.
