A nurse and NPAA member has been awarded $4,500 in WorkCover compensation after being asked to return to work in conditions that posed a clear risk to her safety and wellbeing.
The member had been on approved leave following a workplace harassment incident. Despite the seriousness of the matter, she was advised she may be rostered into emergency shifts where she could be expected to work alongside the individual involved in the original complaint.
Rather than quietly accepting the situation, the member—supported by her NPAA case manager—challenged the request. A WorkCover claim was lodged, outlining the risk this arrangement posed to her mental health, recovery, and sense of safety. WorkCover accepted the claim in full, providing compensation for the missed shifts.
This was not just a financial outcome. It was an acknowledgment that the proposed return-to-work plan failed to meet basic standards of workplace safety. No healthcare worker should be made to choose between maintaining their income and protecting their wellbeing. With the right support, this member was able to stand firm and receive the outcome she deserved.
