Standing Up for Nurses, Even When Management Won’t
A newly employed NPAA member began their role at a health service full of passion but was quickly met with poor support, micro-management, and a culture of intimidation.
With no proper orientation, constant stress from being understaffed, and a manager who took offence at safety concerns being raised, the situation escalated rapidly. When the member reported that residents were regularly missing meal breaks due to unsafe workloads, leadership turned against them. Despite raising these issues with the CEO and a senior manager, the response was dismissive—and in some cases, retaliatory.
It became clear: this wasn’t just mismanagement—it was edging into workplace bullying.
That’s When NPAA Stepped In
With the member’s wellbeing and reputation on the line, our team prepared the case for the Fair Work Commission (FWC). After the employer initially rejected our without prejudice offer and lowballed at $3,000, we kept fighting.
Through strategic advocacy and negotiation, our NPAA case manager secured a $10,800 settlement, recognising the psychological and professional toll of the mistreatment and unresolved staffing issues.
How is the NPAA so effective in defending members during workplace issues and disputes? Our experienced and professional case managers use our unique RED™ case resolution system.
Why is the NPAA different? We believe that real change in healthcare STARTS with empowering frontline nurses, not bureaucrats.
