Late renewal period: Until 30 June 2025 (a $30 late fee applies)
-
After 30 June: You will be removed from the NMBA register and must cease practising.
You can continue to practice while your application is being processed, as long as you are not suspended.
If you do not renew by 31 May, you must stop working and notify your line manager.

This year, AHPRA has rolled out a new online portal for all registration renewals.
What you need to do:

-
Enable multifactor authentication (MFA), which is now mandatory
To complete MFA setup, you will need to:
-
Download the Google Authenticator app to your mobile device
-
Use the app to scan a QR code during portal setup
-
Enter the 6-digit code from the app every time you log in
Set up your portal access well in advance to avoid any last-minute issues or login delays.

Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII)
Under national law, you must not practice without appropriate PII cover.
-
NPAA members have valid PII as part of their membership
-
You can download your Certificate of Currency through your NPAA dashboard
-
Need one with your name on it?
Contact the NPAA hotline
If you are not currently practising, you are not required to hold PII.
Recency of Practice
To maintain your registration, you must have completed a minimum of 450 hours of practice within the last 5 years.
This includes:
-
Clinical roles
-
Education, research, admin, or management roles
If you hold dual registration (e.g., as a nurse and midwife), you must meet recency of practice in each profession.
Criminal History
You must notify AHPRA if there have been changes to your criminal record that could impact your ability to practise safely.
You must declare:
-
Any offence with a potential sentence of 12 months or more
-
In WA: convictions for unpaid parking fines
-
In QLD: if you pleaded guilty and the outcome was guilty
-
In TAS: speeding or parking fines generally do not need to be declared unless they involve a conviction
If unsure, it is always safer to declare. Minor matters, if declared accurately, may not require further action.
Health Conditions and Impairments
You must declare any physical or mental impairment, condition, disability, or substance dependency that affects your ability to practice safely.
If your condition is well-managed and does not impair your ability to practice, you do not need to declare it.
Exposure-Prone Procedures (EEPs)
You will be asked whether you perform EEPs and whether you comply with:
-
Communicable Disease Network Australia (CDNA) guidelines
-
National guidelines for healthcare workers with bloodborne viruses
Relevant links and information are provided during the renewal process.
Right to Practice
If your right to practice at a healthcare facility has been restricted or withdrawn due to your conduct, performance or health, you must declare it.
This question typically applies to Nurse Practitioners or Midwives with specific clinical privileges, such as admitting rights.
It does not apply to general employment matters like being performance managed or terminated.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
To renew your registration, you must declare that you have met the CPD standard.
